Standup PaddleBoarding in Amsterdam

What's better than discovering a city from its waters? Especially in a beautiful city like Amsterdam! Last Sunday I went to a 2-hour Standup Paddleboarding tour along Amsterdam canals and the river Amstel. If you love being on the water, then standup paddleboarding or SUP is fun and enjoyable. While paddling through, we passed bridges, beautiful townhouses and famous museums. If you're pondering whether or not to try SUP in Amsterdam - here are a few things to know:

Last Sunday I went to a 2-hour Standup Paddleboarding tour along Amsterdam canals and the river Amstel. If you love being on the water, then standup paddleboarding or SUP is fun and enjoyable. While paddling through, we passed bridges, beautiful townhouses and famous museums.

If you’re pondering whether or not to try SUP in Amsterdam – here are a few things to know:

WHEN TO GO PADDLING IN AMSTERDAM?

The best season to go out paddle boarding in the Netherlands is April till October.

If you’re an experienced paddler fall and winter in Amsterdam can be stunning as the canals are quiet and the city itself is less busy at that time of year.

CAN YOU JOIN A SUP TOUR IF YOU NEVER PADDLED BEFORE?

Yes, you can. Although I’d recommend taking 1 SUP lesson before joining the tour. I was a complete newbie and joined the tour which was super fun, but it took me about an hour to get used to ‘floating feeling’ and relax.

IS STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING HARD?

Stand up paddleboarding is not that difficult. It is actually super easy, as it can be learned over the course of a day – compared to most sports. Not only it’s super fun, but it’s also an excellent full-body workout.

IS IT HARD TO BALANCE?

I’d say it’s twice as hard if your body is stiff. Once you are comfortable paddling on your knees, standing up gets easier – if you try to relax your body and also trust your body. Try to relax as much as you can. It’s just SUP. Getting up and down a few times may help.

One of the things I like most about paddleboarding is that it makes you focus on ‘here and now’. You focus on paddling and enjoy the views. There are no distractions, no other thoughts. It’s just you and the water.

If you’re looking for a unique experience, I’d totally recommend taking a SUP tour.
